One Hundred Summers: The People of the Appalachian Mountain Club, Professional White Mountain Trail Crew, Their Work and Adventures.
2016 Book by Natalie Beittel and Kyle Peckham.
The people of the Appalachian Mountain Club’s(AMC) professional White Mountain Trail Crew are rarely seen and seldom spoken of, yet hundreds of miles of their work crisscross the New Hampshire and Maine mountains. As young men and women with their own culture, history, and tradition, they spend their summer months battling the forces of nature and the ever-increasing number of hikers in the mountains. Meet these people of the trail in One Hundred Summers, a new book that uses firsthand accounts to relate the history and adventures of the Trail Crew in the White Mountains. Filled with tales of endurance, triumph, tragedy, and humor, One Hundred Summers gives recognition to the trail systems people have been walking on for almost a century now.
Since 1919, when the idea of the first formalized crew was born, the AMC Professional Trail Crew has built and maintained many of the trails, bridges, and shelters that hikers enjoy today. Their stories celebrate the evolution of trails and the incredible increase in the number of people hiking them. Stories spanning the decades reveal that while many things have changed, much remains the same.
Local authors Natalie Beittel and Kyle Peckham, being former Crew members themselves, traveled the country, from coast to coast and sat down with former members of the AMC Pro Trail Crew to hear and record their stories. Coupled with incredible research and history, it is now a book for hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, and all lovers of mountains and history to enjoy.
