Week 8

The dragonflies gather in large numbers late summer evenings zooming in erratic circles over the farm. We take the girls away from their bedtime routine to go out and see them, watching them zig zag all over the sky. A few nights ago we watched George crouched low in the grass overwhelmed by his choices of which flying object to pounce on. Then the kids looked from the trampoline while Kyle and I found one resting on the clothesline who tolerated us getting a close-up peek. Its head and bright blue back were illuminated by the setting sun showing off a surprisingly human like face with black eyes and black mouth. It seemed to be taking a break to regurgitate the wings of whatever fly it had just eaten, we watched as the remnants were moving in and out of its mouth. We were captivated, in awe, a feeling when realized what it was, brought a smile to my face. I had listened to a podcast earlier in the summer about the emotion awe and how to find it and the value awe has in making our lives richer. The podcaster talked about finding awe in the everyday; a run on the beach, a mosh pit, or under a starry sky, and we found it that evening in the face of a dragonfly.
