CSA week 13
/The nights are cooler and I listen to the coyotes yip and howl under an extra layer of blankets on the porch. Song dogs some people call them. I try and send Moon telepathic messages when the coyotes are singing, “leave them alone when we wander the woods, THEIR woods”. The calm pressure of his head on my lap must indicate he hears me. I know the coyotes know when we are out there walking as I watch their tracks cover mine day after day in the snow in the winter. Its somehow more unnerving this time of year when there is no proof evident to me of where they have been and what they are up to except for their sounds at night.
The winter Rye is coming up as a cover in empty areas of the garden. It’s maybe the most satisfying crop, no harvesting or expectations, its only job is to grow and protect the soil. Eggplants and peppers are still going strong, some of their branches so heavy with fruit they are breaking if I don’t get to them soon enough relieving them of their weighty and colorful burdens. Zinnias and strawflowers that escaped being cut for bouquets are changing shape, their centers popping up and out into a cone shape in the formation of seeds, feeding the birds, butterflies, and the ever more frantic bees, all who are prepping for winter like we are. Sweet potatoes come out of the ground in all sorts of funky shapes and ridiculous sizes, and some with mouse nibbles here and there.
All good signs of the end of the growing season coming near. We are ready.
